Clean Water for Aceh Jaya

The people of Aceh Jaya now have easy access to clean water, thanks to a new water facility (BLUD-SPAM) called “Tirta Mon Mata” which was launched by Aceh Jaya Bupati Azhar Abdurrahman on June 25, 2009 in Calang. This is the first and biggest water facility in the Aceh region. At the launch, LGSP and other donors supporting the development formally handed over the facility to the local government of Aceh Jaya.

LGSP began supporting the development of this facility in early 2005 after Calang’s infrastructure had been devastated by the tsunami of December 2004. Donors such as the American Red Cross (ARC) coordinated the construction of the water facility, while LGSP focused on the institutional aspects. LGSP assisted the local government with BLUD management system training, staff recruitment, and legal drafting. This year, LGSP assisted the local government in setting its water tariffs and drafting the relevant regulations, together with ARC and a local service provider, PT Inowa Consult.

”We provide clean water without seeking a profit,” says Azhar, indicating the local government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of its public services. Tirta Mon Mata already supplies clean water to 1,500 households in Aceh Jaya, and plans to serve the entire district eventually. (Harum Sekartaji/NO)
